Health Hypnosis is a really interesting subject. Hypnosis has been around for a very long time, but it seems that we are only just beginning to understand it’s potential. The following is a brief overview of hypnosis through the years, and you may find yourself quite surprised by some of its uses. In 1841 James Braid coined the term Hypnosis, before that it had been known as Mesmerism. Braid decided to update the name as there was now a more complete understanding of what was happening when someone used hypnosis. Practitioners of Mesmerism thought that it was due to some unique power or knowledge they held, that people entered the unique state. Braid realised that the Hypnotist did not have any power, but rather the trance resulted by that which was going on inside the subject’s thoughts. Among the earliest known people to work on self-hypnosis was a man called Emile Coue. The work he did complimented the works of Braid in previous years. The face of hypnosis was changing as people now came to look upon hypnosis through the eyes of a participant, instead of one reliant on the hypnotist. In the twilight of the 19th century, Professor Sigmond Freud started experimenting with hypnosis to support his psychoanalysis theory, but he announced he felt it had little value. He is reported saying at a later stage in his career, that if he known the value of hypnosis at the beginning of his psychoanalysis career, as he did in the latter part of his life, he would have never stopped using it. A new style of hypnosis was pioneered by Psychologist Milton Erickson in the 50’s. Therapists called his method indirect hypnosis, it distanced itself from the more direct approaches used previously. Helping subjects who had been unsuccessful became a niche of Psychologist Milton Ericksons. A big figure in hypnosis in the mid 1900’s was Stage hypnotist Dave Elman, whose approach was much more authoritative than that of Milton Erickson. Dave Elman was known for his success with rapid and powerful approaches, a lot of which are commonly used today. Mr Elman was perhaps best known for teaching anaesthesiologists in the use of hypnotic anaesthesia, his methods are effectively used to this day for pain-free childbirth and traditional analysis. Ormond McGill passed away in 2005, a hypnotist who had a major influence on many hypnotists. He authored the ‘Encyclopaedia of Stage Hypnosis’ and he was called ‘The Dean of American Hypnosis’. Respected worldwide for his stage hypnosis work, however it must be said he was also brilliant as a hypnotherapist as well. Gil Boyne 2014-2010, creator of Transforming Therapy, which used discoveries made by Dr Erickson and Elman, and is at the cutting edge of regression therapy today. Gil Boyne was a student of Elman and Erickson’s styles, and expanded them to create the regression hypnotherapy many use today. A lot of his students would contend that Boyne was this centuries innovator of analytical therapy techniques. With the resources available nowadays, modern hypnotherapists have much more access to information than ever before. An ever increasing amount of serious conditions are being cured using analytical therapy, due to the advances made with the help of internet forums. More commonly used sessions, such as weight loss and smoking cessation continue to improve as well. With the developments being made in hypnotherapy now, we are living in a great age for the development of hypnosis.
